Alps en famille

And now it’s time to get some fresh air high up in the Swiss Alps. We’re off to Geneva tomorrow and then on to Nendaz for some quality family time.

What a beautiful place this is. We’re in the Valais region of Switzerland in a ski resort called Haute Nendaz in the Four Valleys. The pic is of us at the top of Mont Fort – via cable car I should add! Our American friends – the Millers – would be chuffed to pieces with a pic like that. It would be on their Christmas card in a heartbeat. Panic not, you won’t be getting a Green family card.

Top of Mont Fort – looking like something from a James Bond film.

Lots of fresh air and lots of walking – it’s pretty perfect here apart from the price of everything!  I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised post Brexit vote but come on … How much for a coffee out of season! We went in to Sion last night (very nice city in the valley on the banks of the Rhone) and searched for something affordable. Found some cracking pizza for less than £20.00 each in the end. Bargain!

Actually we’re enjoying the bread and cheese picnics and will report back with the most expensive coffee we can find before we’re done.

I didn’t know what a Trottinette (or something like that) was until yesterday. Turns out that it’s a downhill mountain scooter. Now that sounds fun … hmm. Few tales to tell and maybe not my best decision on behalf of the family. Must remember to consult before committing us all. Anyway, not too much damage done (a few sporting injuries including a grazed knee and a ripped trouser) and possibly the best way of arriving in Verbier. They don’t do that on Made In Chelsea do they? I wonder why not …

Now, big question being considered for the day. Should we do tandem parascending?

Proper mountain weather this afternoon and evening. The storm has rolled in and shows no sign of shifting. I’m always interested in how places take on a completely different character in the rain. Nendaz this afternoon felt like some post apocalyptic scene with no-one around. Very odd after the lovely sunny place it was just a few hours before. Hey ho, hunker down, eat salty snacks and drink red wine. Lovely.

Great morning walk exploring the bisses – old irrigation channels that run along the hillsides in this valley. They’re the same as the waals we walked alongside in the Italian Tyrol last year. There’s something rather nice about the sound of running water and maybe something good about the negative ions from the water.  Or maybe that’s a load of old rubbish. Whatever, we skipped along and covered quite a distance today. Always good to have a baguette and some Vache Qui Rit in your rucksack!

Great week in Switzerland- thanks fam! High up in the mountains and some great walks.

Followed by a much deserved beer and then a cheese fondu (not the world’s most healthy or balanced meal!)

Zoe said on the way to Geneva today that it must be very hard to be depressed in such a beautiful place. That’s a great thought and with the mountains all around, fresh air and clear skies, I’d like to think that it’s true.

We dropped in to Montreaux on the way to the airport. What a beautiful spot. Hopefully the next time we’re back here is for the Montreaux Jazz Festival – 2017 maybe? I’d forgotten that this is where Freddie Mercury had considered home. The statue of him by the lake side had a queue of people waiting to get their pic with the great man. A real sign of the impact he had on so many people.

And that view across the lake – just lovely …

And now home to Chippy.

Zoe and Alice are heading back to Edinburgh and Leeds next week and then the next sector starts.

No dreadlocks yet. But there’s plenty of time yet …
